A Couple of Sandra's Other GRREAT Dogs

Corky and Phoenix

Corky was one of our early rescues. He had white stripes on his nose from abuse. A local trainer was advocating a cure for barking dogs that involved putting rubber bands on the dog's nose and snapping them when the dog barked. The rubber band snapping caused tissue damage and left these white patches of hair. He entered the rescue weighing under 50 pounds and had to stay at the vet's, Dr. Wallace's, for a month until he was ready to go to a foster home. He was my first foster dog and was a stately, very gentle, and extremely loyal dog. After 6 months with me he was finally physically ready to be adopted and that was when I realized that I could never let him go. He was the first dog that I adopted from GRREAT. He lived to be over 12, dying from cancer with help on a blanket in a sunny spot in the living room, surrounded by family and Dr Weidinger.

Phoenix was one of Casie's puppies. Casie was in a foster home and had 8 pups. Jacob K. adopted Casie, and still has her and she is a wonderful tracker. Phoenix became my foster dog when he was about 8 weeks old. He had SAS, sub aortic stenosis, and severe hip dysplasia and was unadoptable to the public. I adopted him and had an FHO on his worst hip, but it never improved enough to operate on the second hip. He only lived to be three, dying instantly of a massive heart attack after his usual swim.
